Welcome to Issue 4 of Bus Buzz, the quarterly newsletter from the public transport team at the Institute of Transport and Logistics Studies (ITLS) in The University of Sydney Business School. Welcome to John Nelson, Visiting Fellow
Professor John Nelson from the University of Aberdeen is visiting ITLS for 3 months. John is particularly interested in the application and evaluation of new technologies to improve public transport delivery and public transport information as well as the policy frameworks and regulatory regime for sustainable transport systems. During his visit to ITLS he will be conducting an evaluation of intelligent transport systems for public transport. He is presenting an ITLS seminar on Transport and the digital economy on Tuesday 7 June.

  • Bus Rapid Transit: State-of-the-art in performance and benefits on Wednesday 29 June
  • Innovations for public transport in low density areas on Thursday 7 July.

Simplifying bus contracts
An ITLS working paper by David Hensher, Corinne Mulley and Neil Smith aims to simplify payment formula for bus contracts. The paper will be presented at Thredbo 12: International Conference on Competition and Ownership in Land Passenger Transport in South Africa in September.

How many buses could a heavy rail project buy?
Professor David Hensher spoke on "Urban transport: A little less conversation, a little more action" at the University's Powered by Research Breakfast on 12 May. A "food-for-thought" statistic was how many buses could be purchased for the cost of a heavy rail project such as the proposed North West Rail Link: $5 billion could buy over 14,000 buses.

Community Transport in Victoria
Professor Corinne Mulley gave the Keynote presentation on 'Future models for community transport in Victoria' at the Victorian Community Transport Association Conference in Bendigo on 23 May.

Professor Corinne Mulley was a speaker and member of a discussion panel at the CEDA (Committee for Economic Development of Australia) Transport Infrastructure Series on 25 May.

Bus or batmobile?
The Herald Sun (15 April 2011) reports a new luxury superbus, designed by a Dutch astronaut, was unveiled at the World Exhibition of the International Association of Public Transport (UITP) in Dubai.

Certificate of Transport Management 22-25 June 2011
Enrolments are still open for our 4 day professional development course for staff in the bus and coach industry including operators, suppliers and consultants. The course provides knowledge and skills in management, planning and policy areas that are central to the success of the industry.

Enrol by 11 June for Railway Planning and Operations over 8 days in Winter School from 28 June to 22 July. Enrol as a non-award student and count the subject towards future programs at ITLS.

As well as the short courses on Bus Rapid Transit on Wednesday 29 June and Innovations for public transport on Thursday 7 July, one-day courses coming up include:
  • Understanding costs for community transport on 22 August
  • Bus network planning on 28 October.

ITLS awards night
Successful Certificate of Transport Management 2010 students received their certificates at the ITLS Awards night on 7 May. The BusNSW Prize for best overall performance in the Certificate of Transport Management 2010 was awarded to Daniel Moore of TransLink, Queensland.

The September 2011 issue of Bus Buzz will include a report from the World Symposium on Transport and Land Use Research.
