Welcome to Issue 5 of Bus Buzz, the quarterly newsletter from the public transport team at the Institute of Transport and Logistics Studies (ITLS) in The University of Sydney Business School. World Symposium on Transport and Land Use Research
Professor Corinne Mulley and Dr Rhonda Daniels presented two papers on public transport research at the inaugural World Symposium on Transport and Land Use Research (WSTLUR) in Whistler Canada on 28-30 July 2011.

Are shuttle buses a good idea?
Professor Corinne Mulley and Dr Rhonda Daniels spoke at the Western Sydney Public Transport Users symposium on 13 August 2011 on free shuttle buses. The presentations prompted debate about the purpose of the free CBD shuttle bus services, which services should be free and whether the shuttle buses are the best use of the public transport budget.

Active travel in cities
Professor Corinne Mulley and Dr Rhonda Daniels attended a two day workshop on walking and cycling, co-hosted by the Major Cities Unit (Department of Infrastructure and Transport) and Infrastructure Australia on 8-9 August 2011. Feedback from the workshop will be used to develop the Commonwealth Government's position on active travel in cities and work towards producing ways of including active travel in the evaluation guidelines for transport infrastructure projects.
Conferences coming up in September
The public transport team at ITLS will be presenting papers on their research at two conferences in September:
  • Thredbo 12 on Ownership and competition in land passenger transport is in Durban, South Africa on 11-15 September 2011.

Welcome to Dr Michal Wolanski, Visiting Scholar
Dr Michal Wolanski is visiting ITLS from Poland for 3 months until October 2011. He is interested in project management and public private partnerships in transport.

Sydney's latest Household Travel Survey results
The Bureau of Transport Statistics has released its 2009/10 Household Travel Survey Summary Report, 2011 release. Between 2008/09 and 2009/10, the number of car trips declined, train trips increased and bus trips were stable.

Brisbane's New Busway opens
The Brisbane Times reported there were few problems when the $466 million section of Brisbane's Eastern Busway opened on 29 August. There are five new bus routes.

Seattle's strategic plan for public transport
Presentations at WSTLUR offered the opportunity to visit Seattle and Vancouver. Seattle has released a new strategic plan. The Service Guidelines companion to the strategic plan provides a transparent formula for allocating and reallocating services using performance measures.

Vancouver's integrated transport authority
Vancouver's integrated transport authority, TransLink, is responsible for both public transport and roads, and could provide a model for Sydney's new Transport for NSW. TransLink is one of the few regional transport authorities responsible for planning, financing, building and management of all public transport modes and infrastructure (bridges and roads). The WSTLUR conference included a presentation on TransLink activities.

Professor Carey Curtis gives ITLS seminar on Tuesday 4 October 2011
Professor Carey Curtis from Curtin University will give an ITLS seminar on Integrating land use with public transport: the use of a discursive accessibility tool to inform metropolitan spatial planning.

Successful course on Community Transport
Over 40 community transport operators attended the one day ITLS course on Knowing your costs in Community Transport on Monday 22 August, sponsored by the NSW Department of Transport.
