Welcome to Issue 6 of Bus Buzz, the quarterly newsletter from the public transport team at the Institute of Transport and Logistics Studies (ITLS) in The University of Sydney Business School. 34th Australasian Transport Research Forum
The public transport team presented the following papers at the 34th ATRF conference in Adelaide, South Australia on 28-30 September 2011.

ARC Discovery project on public transport
Professor David Hensher and Professor John Rose have been awarded an ARC Discovery grant titled "Valuation of service reliability and crowding under risk and uncertainty: neglected drivers of demand for public transport". The 3 year study from 2012 will identify the role that improved service reliability and reduced crowding play in influencing the switch from car to public transport for the commute.
Transport Opinion Survey: Australians reject carbon tax on bus fuel
The September 2011 quarter of the ITLS-Interfleet Transport Opinion Survey (TOPS) showed that Australians reject a carbon tax on bus fuel. More Information

  • Professor Corinne Mulley was elected to the inaugural Board of the new World Society for Transport and Land Use Research for a six year term and is currently Vice-President. More Information
  • Professor Corinne Mulley spoke at the NSW Community Transport Association conference on 24 October 2011.
  • Dr Rhonda Daniels was a panel member on transport issues at the NSW Ageing Roundtable on 15 September 2011.

PUBLIC TRANSPORT EDUCATION
Summer School: Public Transport Policy and Planning
Enrol by 9 December 2011 for the subject Public Transport Policy and Planning in Summer School over 7 days in January-February 2012 at ITLS. Summer School provides an opportunity for external students to undertake ITLS units of study outside of a degree program. More Information

New book: Human Transit by Jarrett Walker
Human Transit blogger Jarrett Walker's new book Human Transit: How Clearer Thinking about Public Transit Can Enrich Our Communities and Our Lives will be released in December 2011. Highly recommended. More information on author's website and publisher's website.
Public Transport Customer Satisfaction Survey
The Bureau of Transport Statistics has released the 2011 Transport Customer Survey which measures public transport users' satisfaction with train, bus and ferry services in Sydney on 27 different aspects of service. 86% of bus users were satisfied with their trip. Bus users were most dissatisfied with the bus keeping to timetable and being informed of service changes. More Information
Bus awards to NSW
Two NSW bus companies won national awards at the Bus Industry Confederation Conference in October. Comfort DelGro Cabcharge won the BIC Environment and Innovation award and Karim Hussain, Managing Director of the Blue Mountains Bus Company, won the BIC Achiever of the Year award. More Information
Double-decker bus in service in Sydney
The Sun Herald reported on 13 November 2011 that Northern beaches-based Forest Coach Lines will put into service a double-decker bus to reduce fuel consumption and cut city congestion. The 96 seat vehicle - being called the "Airbus A380 of buses" - delivers more passengers for less space at the bus stop. More Information Photo: Anthony Johnson

The Herald Sun reports that "The future of public transport has finally arrived with Heathrow Airport officially unveiling laser-guided travel pods". More Information
